Chapter Seventeen – Matheus

“Sullian.” Cayde visibly bristled and stopped walking as the elder council member approached.

The rest of the group bunched up around Cayde. But both Matheus and the other guard, who he didn’t recognize, made a physical barrier between Sullian and Ellen and Beau.

“Cayde, I never expected to see you back here.” Sullian’s lip curled almost imperceptibly but it curled all the same.

“Lorelis called me back and since I am loyal to him, I came,” Cayde said bluntly. There was no respect in his voice for the man who was his superior in social rank if nothing else.

“Like a little loyal lap dog.” Sullian sneered as he drew level with them. “And Matheus, returned so soon? With your tail between your legs, I expect. Two little lap dogs.”

Matheus curled his hand into a fist. What he wouldn’t give to take just one shot at this guy. “I have come to visit my father,” Matheus replied. But he wasn’t going to tell him why. He didn’t want Sullian to know about his mate before his father.

“And who is this you have with you? Traitors to the realm?” Sullian halted and turned to face Ellen and Beau.

“Traitors...” Cayde began but the second guard reached out his hand and placed it on Cayde’s chest. Cayde clamped his mouth shut. Not that Sullian noted this exchange. If he had, he would have made much of it, turning a knife in a wound was Sullian’s favorite pastime.

“Sullian, you must have things to do. A man of your position and with the change in law imminent.” Matheus made a second fist and stepped forward, his chest puffed out, his shoulders rolled back. This man was not going to intimidate anyone, least of all Matheus’s mate.

However, Sullian was oblivious to the tension in the air. “Do I know you?” Sullian’s voice wavered as he stared straight at Ellen.

“No.” Ellen met the man’s gaze and held it. “Unless you’ve been to Wishing Moon Bay.”

“Wishing Moon Bay.” Sullian’s eyes drifted to the left to where Beau stood next to his aunt. “No, I’ve never been to Wishing Moon Bay.”

“And I have never been to Cairnnor before today, so we have never met.” Ellen slid her arm around Beau’s shoulders, sensing a threat. “Shall we go to see your father?” Ellen touched her fingertips to Matheus’s hand.

He blinked and curled his fingers around hers briefly before he nodded and walked on. Ellen stayed by his side, her shoulder pressed against his as she held Beau close. She had no history with Sullian but even she seemed to sense the bad in him.

“Who was he?” Beau hissed with a quick glance over his shoulder.

“His name is Sullian, and he is the man who opposes Lorelis,” Cayde replied. “He wants to keep us here on this island. He was the one who was instrumental in my banishment.”

“Banishment?” Ellen squeaked.

“Yes.” Cayde stomped down the corridor, his good mood gone.

“Sullian was Argothorn’s main adviser, among other things. He caused a lot of heartache and trouble.
